Commercial EV Charger Installation

Connex Electrical designs and installs EV charging for Brisbane and Moreton Bay businesses, fleets, apartment buildings and body corporates, from a single workplace charger to multi-bay sites with load management and user billing. Every project starts with a load assessment and a fixed, staged quote.

Who we install for

  • Workplaces: staff and visitor charging, a growing expectation from employees who drive EVs.
  • Fleets: overnight depot charging for vans, utes and pool cars, sized to your shift patterns.
  • Apartment buildings and body corporates: shared or per-bay charging with load management and billing.
  • Retail and hospitality: destination charging that keeps customers on site longer.
  • Trades and workshops: three-phase charging alongside existing machinery loads.

How a commercial EV charging project works

  1. Load assessment. We look at your main switchboard, supply capacity and demand, so the design matches what your site can actually support.
  2. Design and staging. We plan charger locations, cable routes and a distribution board sized for the final number of chargers, then stage the rollout to suit your budget.
  3. Fixed quote. A written price for stage one, with indicative pricing for later stages.
  4. Approvals. Energex rules for home EV chargers changed in October 2026, and we check the current requirements for your connection and lodge any notification Energex needs. For strata buildings we provide documents for the committee and general meeting.
  5. Installation and commissioning. Chargers, load management and billing software are set up and tested, with a Certificate of Testing and Compliance.

Apartment buildings and body corporates

In Queensland, installing a charger on common property needs body corporate approval, and bodies corporate can make by-laws covering EV charging, metering and billing. The two common approaches are a shared charging zone, where a few chargers serve everyone and the software bills each user, or per-bay chargers for owners who want their own, connected to a shared, load-managed backbone. A building-wide plan stops one-off installs from eating up the building's spare capacity and keeps cabling tidy.

If you are an owner who wants a charger before the building has a plan, we can still help. We will prepare a proposal for your committee showing the circuit route, metering and load management.

Load management: more chargers without a supply upgrade

Dynamic load management measures the site's total demand in real time and shares the spare capacity between the cars that are charging. When the building is busy, charging slows; when demand drops, it speeds up again. For most sites it is the difference between installing ten chargers now and paying for a costly supply upgrade first.

AC or DC fast charging?

For workplaces, homes away from home and overnight fleets, AC chargers at 7kW to 22kW are the right tool: cars are parked for hours and AC is far cheaper to install and run. DC fast chargers suit sites where cars stop for a short time, but they need a large supply and a much bigger budget. We will tell you honestly which your site needs.

Rebates and grants for business chargers

Business charger funding in Queensland has come and gone through state and federal programs. There is currently no Queensland Government rebate for home EV chargers. The state Zero Emission Vehicle rebate for cars closed on 2 September 2024 when its funding ran out. If a business program is open when you plan your project, we will point you to it, but we never price a job on the assumption a grant will come through.

Commercial EV charging FAQs

How many chargers can our building support?

It depends on your spare supply capacity, not just the number of car spaces. With dynamic load management, chargers share whatever capacity is free at any moment, so a building can often support many more chargers than a simple calculation suggests. A load assessment of your main switchboard and recent demand data gives a firm answer.

How do residents or staff pay for charging?

Options include charger software that bills each user through an app or RFID card, individual sub-metering per bay, or including charging as a staff benefit. For body corporates, the billing approach usually forms part of the EV by-law. We recommend a system once we know how the chargers will be used.

Can we start small and add chargers later?

Yes, and it is usually the smartest approach. We install the backbone (supply, cable tray and a distribution board sized for the end state) with the first few chargers, so adding more later is a quick plug-in job rather than a rebuild.

How can a body corporate add EV charging for the whole building?

Start with a load assessment of the building supply, then plan a shared or individual charger layout with load management so many cars can charge without a costly supply upgrade. Billing can run through the charger software or sub-metering. We provide the assessment, a staged plan and a fixed quote for the first chargers.

What is load management on an EV charger?

Load management lets the charger slow down when the rest of the property is drawing a lot of power, then speed up again when demand drops. It protects your main supply from overloading, so you can often avoid a costly supply upgrade. It is standard practice in apartments and businesses and useful in homes with big loads like ducted air conditioning.

Can I install an EV charger in my apartment car park?

Usually, but you need body corporate approval first. In Queensland, installing a charger on common property needs body corporate approval, and bodies corporate can make by-laws covering EV charging, metering and billing. We can supply a written proposal covering the circuit route, metering and load management that you can take to your committee, which makes approval much easier.
