Kuraby blocks and cable runs

Kuraby has some of the larger residential blocks in the southside, and many have a detached garage or shed set back from the house. When the car parks there, the charger cable has to travel from the meter box across the yard. That usually means a trench with buried conduit and a cable sized up to avoid voltage drop. We measure the distance on site and include the trenching in a fixed price.

Where a block has been subdivided and a newer house built at the back, the layout is usually more compact: an attached garage near the meter box and a modern board.

Most homes are single phase. A 7kW charger refills a day of driving in a few hours, and if the car sits in the shed most of the week, you may only need to charge once or twice.

Kuraby install considerations

Kuraby station on the Beenleigh line gives residents a train option into the city, so the EV might be a weekend or errand car. A simple untethered charger often suits that use, with the car's own cable kept in the boot.

Older homes on big blocks often have switchboards that have been extended over the years to feed sheds, pumps and workshops. We check total supply and how the existing sub-boards are wired before adding a charger. If a shed already has a sub-board, it may be possible to run the charger from there, provided the feeding cable is big enough.

For long runs and outbuildings, our home EV charger installation page covers the options in more detail.

  • Already have a charger from the dealer? We install it, so you only pay for installation.
  • Charge overnight on an off-peak tariff, or from surplus solar, to keep running costs low.
  • Mount the charger on the garage wall closest to the meter box. A shorter run is the easiest saving.
  • Choose a 7kW single-phase charger. It suits almost every household and avoids three-phase costs.

Your questions, answered

My Kuraby shed is 30 metres from the house. Can I charge there?

Yes. We run a dedicated cable from the switchboard to the shed, usually underground in conduit, and size it for the distance so the charger runs at full speed. If the shed already has a sub-board with a big enough feed, we may connect there instead. Either way, the trenching and cable are included in your fixed quote.

How much does EV charger installation cost in Kuraby?

A standard single-phase install in Kuraby is from $990 inc GST with Connex Electrical, plus the charger unless you already have one. Long cable runs, switchboard upgrades and three-phase chargers cost extra and are quoted in writing first. Most installs take 2 to 4 hours.

How can I keep EV charger installation affordable in Kuraby?

Put the charger close to the switchboard, choose a 7kW single-phase unit and send photos so we can quote without a visit. If you already have a charger, you only pay for installation, at the standard $990 inc GST. Every quote is fixed, so there are no surprises on the day.

Can you install a charger on an acreage property?

Yes. Acreage installs often involve a shed or garage some distance from the house, so the main questions are cable size, trenching and whether the shed already has a sub-board with enough capacity. Some acreage homes already have three-phase for pumps or workshops, which opens up faster charging. We quote the trenching and cable separately so the costs are clear.

What if my garage is a long way from the switchboard?

A longer cable run is common and is simply priced into your quote. The cable size goes up with distance to keep voltage drop in check, and the route might go through the roof space, under the house or along an external wall in conduit. Sending photos of the switchboard and the charger spot helps us price it accurately without a visit.

Is there a Queensland rebate for home EV chargers?

Not at the moment. There is currently no Queensland Government rebate for home EV chargers. The state Zero Emission Vehicle rebate for cars closed on 2 September 2024 when its funding ran out. Occasionally a retailer or federally funded trial offers a subsidised charger, and if one fits your situation we will tell you. Be wary of "free installation" offers that lock you into a particular charger or energy plan.
