Double garages and brick walls: McDowall installs

McDowall is quieter and leafier than some of its neighbours, with brick homes from the 1970s through to the 1990s on blocks that often back onto bushland. Most have an attached double garage, and the switchboard is commonly on the garage wall or the outside wall right next to it. That combination keeps the cable short and the price close to our standard install.

Homes of this era sit in a middle ground for switchboards. They usually have some safety switches, but often not on every circuit, and a few still have older fuses on the lighting. A charger needs its own RCD-protected circuit, so we check for space and whether the main switch suits the extra load.

Larger family homes here often run ducted air, a pool pump and more. We look at the total load before choosing the charger's current setting.

Living in McDowall with an EV

There is no train station in McDowall, so most households depend on the car for work, school and shopping, often with two vehicles in the driveway. If the next car could be electric too, a charger that can share power with a second unit later is worth choosing now.

Rooftop solar is a common sight on McDowall homes. Pairing panels with a solar-matched charger works best where someone is home during the day or the car stays parked over the weekend. Our guide to EV charger brands explains which models do this well and what they cost.

Westfield Chermside and Gympie Road are a short drive east for shopping and errands, so a lot of weekday trips are local.

What an EV charger install costs in McDowall

A standard single-phase EV charger installation in McDowall costs from $990 inc GST with Connex Electrical, plus the charger if you need one. Most McDowall houses pay just that. The price only rises for a long cable run, an older switchboard that needs upgrading, or a three-phase charger, and you see any extra in a fixed written quote first.

What McDowall homes usually pay
SituationPrice
Garage or carport close to a modern switchboardFrom $990 installed (inc GST)
Charger on the far side of the house, or a detached garageStandard price plus the extra cable, quoted from photos
Older board with fuses or no safety switchesStandard price plus a switchboard upgrade, quoted separately

Every standard install includes its own circuit and safety switch protection, the cable run within the standard length, mounting and setup, full testing and a Certificate of Testing and Compliance. The charger itself is extra unless you already own one.

Keeping your McDowall install affordable

  • Mount the charger on the garage wall closest to the meter box. A shorter run is the easiest saving.
  • If a second EV is coming, size the cable for it now rather than paying for a second callout later.
  • Already have a charger from the dealer? We install it, so you only pay for installation.
  • Charge overnight on an off-peak tariff, or from surplus solar, to keep running costs low.

McDowall is about 17 km from Mango Hill, roughly 25 minutes in normal traffic, making it one of the shorter Brisbane trips from our workshop.

Every McDowall job gets a fixed written price before any work starts, so the quote is what you pay. For a line-by-line breakdown, see the EV charger installation cost guide for Brisbane, or call 0474 207 609.

Common questions in McDowall

Can I charge two cars in my McDowall double garage?

Yes. The simplest approach is two chargers that share one circuit's capacity, so both cars charge overnight without overloading your supply. If only one car is electric for now, we can run cable sized for a second charger and mount the first in a spot that leaves room for another. That keeps the future job small.

What does it cost to install an EV charger in McDowall?

A standard single-phase install in McDowall is from $990 inc GST with Connex Electrical, plus the charger unless you already have one. Long cable runs, switchboard upgrades and three-phase chargers cost extra and are quoted in writing first. Most installs take 2 to 4 hours.

What is the most affordable way to install an EV charger in McDowall?

Put the charger close to the switchboard, choose a 7kW single-phase unit and send photos so we can quote without a visit. If you already have a charger, you only pay for installation, at the standard $990 inc GST. Every quote is fixed, so there are no surprises on the day.

Do I need three-phase power to charge an EV at home?

No. Most Brisbane homes are single phase, and a single-phase 32A charger delivers up to about 7.4kW, enough to refill a typical daily commute in two or three hours overnight. Three-phase only helps if your car can accept 11kW or 22kW on AC and you regularly need fast top-ups at home. We can tell you which applies to your car.

Can a Tesla Wall Connector charge other EVs?

Yes. The current Tesla Wall Connector uses the standard Type 2 plug used in Australia, so it can charge non-Tesla EVs as well. It delivers up to about 7.4kW on single phase. It does not follow your solar surplus on its own (Tesla's solar charging features rely on other Tesla hardware), so solar owners who want that often choose a Zappi or Wattpilot instead.

Is there a Queensland rebate for home EV chargers?

Not at the moment. There is currently no Queensland Government rebate for home EV chargers. The state Zero Emission Vehicle rebate for cars closed on 2 September 2024 when its funding ran out. Occasionally a retailer or federally funded trial offers a subsidised charger, and if one fits your situation we will tell you. Be wary of "free installation" offers that lock you into a particular charger or energy plan.
